what is a sensory EQUIPMENT?

Sensory equipment is specifically designed to stimulate one or more of the senses in order to help everything from brain development to social skills. Whilst sight, touch and sound are the three most common types of sensory play equipment, all manner of equipment can be beneficial if it can immerse its user in a new environment or stimulate even a memory. Taste or aroma equipment can be used to trigger a memory of a place or time prompting conversation in patients suffering with dementia.

As awareness continues to grow about the positive benefits of sensory therapy, more and more people are wanting quality equipment that will stand the test of time to help users develop their senses. House of Play are passionate about all things sensory related and are delighted to assist you with your project. If you are wanting to set up your own sensory room or include sensory equipment as part of a bigger project get in touch!

the benefits of a sensory room

Sensory equipment is designed to develop a person’s sense through stimulation. Special equipment such as bubble tubes, lighting, tactile, music & interactive objects combine stimuli for visual, tactile, audio and aroma can help to calm or arouse the senses, help reduce stress and anxiety, encourage communication or even engage and delight the user.

Sensory room equipment has beneficial results for everyone! However, it is especially valuable for people who may have conditions such as Autism, ADHA, Mental Health, Dementia and Cognitive Disabilities. Sensory rooms provide a number of benefits for both the users and the providers such as:

  • Reduces stress & anxiety
  • Brain Development – Helps people strengthen your brain for learning and improves memory
  • Language Development – Encourages people of all ages (especially children) to communicate with each other to develop language skills
  • Fine and Gross Motor Skills – Encourages users to develop push, pull, squeeze and throwing motor skills, also improves their physical ability
  • Problem Solving – Improves problem solving skills and decision-making skills.
  • Cognitive Growth – Helps children understand new processes, like sink and float, get them used to new materials and experiences e.g. new smells.
  • Social Interaction – Encourages users to work together to solve a problem, gets them to work in a team and share ideas with new people.
  • Awareness – Helps become more body aware and self-aware
  • Comforting – Helps calm anxious people, often by giving them some kind of control over their environment.
