Sensory Equipment and You - A Beginner's Guide

  1. What is a sensory room?

Like the name suggests, a sensory room is designed to engage all 5 senses – but touch, sight and sound in particular with therapeutic effects. The concept of a dedicated sensory room with specialised equipment was pioneered by the Dutch in the late 1970’s. It continues to go from strength to strength as awareness of the positive benefits this type of therapeutic play has continues to spread.

2. Why is a sensory room so beneficial?

As humans, we naturally learn and explore from the environment and are hardwired to process information from our senses. This is especially valuable in our younger years and multiple studies have shown the importance of therapy for children which engages the senses, combining the imagination and understanding into new thoughts and discoveries about the world. Sensory equipment essentially ‘supercharges’ these faculties and can help with everything from children developing their motor functions to problem solving skills, language use to emotional intelligence.

3. What makes sensory play different?

Play is so important for the development of a child’s brain but can be quite overwhelming for some, especially those who may have sensory related needs. Due to the increasingly developed technology available, the whole experience in a sensory room can be tailored to any person’s specific needs, from colour of light to sounds of music playing - to either stimulate and excite or calm and sooth, depending on the needs of the individual.

4. Who is a sensory room for?

Sensory room equipment is fantastic for everyone! However, it is especially valuable for people who may have sensory conditions such as autism, mental health issues, dementia or are just wanting to experience something different and unique as part of their sensory experience; it is suitable for people no matter their age or background!
